Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L53 pseudogene 1 (MRPL53P1) is a human processed pseudogene, not encoding a functional protein product. It is derived from the mitochondrial large ribosomal protein gene MRPL53, but has been inactivated by mutations during evolution—such as changes in the start codon—that prevent translation[4]. Processed pseudogenes often arise via retrotransposition and typically lack intronic structure or protein-coding capacity. While some pseudogenes have regulatory RNA roles, there is no specific evidence of functional significance, disease association, or druggability for MRPL53P1[4].
