Mitochondrial ribosomal protein L54 pseudogene

Molecular classification
Other, processed/duplicated pseudogene

Overview

The mitochondrial ribosomal protein L54 pseudogene is a non-coding DNA sequence in the human genome, related to the functional gene coding for the 39S subunit protein of mitochondrial ribosomes. While the functional MRPL54 gene encodes a protein involved in mitochondrial translation and protein synthesis within mitochondria, the pseudogene (designated by this ENSG ID) lacks the ability to produce a functional protein product. Pseudogenes of mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are generally regarded as genomic “fossils,” created through gene duplication or processing events such as retrotransposition, and are not translated into protein[1][2][3]. Pseudogenes occasionally retain sequence similarity to their parent genes but usually harbor disabling mutations (e.g., premature stop codons, frameshifts) that prevent proper expression. These sequences may sometimes be used as evolutionary markers but do not themselves actively participate in cellular processes.
