Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S10 (MRPS10) is a structural component of the mitochondrial small ribosomal subunit (28S) in mammals[1][8][10]. This protein is encoded by a nuclear gene and imported into mitochondria, where it contributes to mitochondrial protein synthesis by facilitating translation of mitochondrial mRNAs, many of which encode subunits for oxidative phosphorylation complexes[1][3][8]. MRPS10 belongs to the ribosomal protein S10P family and is one of approximately 30 distinct proteins that, together with 12S rRNA, form the mitochondrial small ribosomal subunit[1][8][11]. The protein plays a key role in the assembly and fidelity of the mitoribosome, influencing mitochondrial protein production and mitochondrial function[2][4]. Knock-down or deficiency in MRPS10/mS10 alters mitoribosome composition and can affect the translation pattern of mitochondrial mRNAs, but this is primarily demonstrated in experimental models like Arabidopsis and has not been directly implicated as a therapeutic target or druggable receptor in humans[2][4]. No drugs or clinical biomarkers are currently linked to MRPS10, nor are specific safety concerns or disease roles established beyond its essential function for mitochondrial translation[5][7][10].
