Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S11 (MRPS11) is a nuclear-encoded protein that forms part of the 28S small subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome), where it functions as a structural component involved in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes have a higher protein:rRNA ratio and lack a 5S rRNA. MRPS11 is highly conserved across species and is essential for normal mitochondrial translation, supporting the synthesis of proteins required for oxidative phosphorylation. There is no evidence that MRPS11 functions as a therapeutic target, nor is it a known biomarker or subject of drug development efforts. Multiple transcript variants and isoforms have been described, and a pseudogene is present on chromosome 20. Although occasionally referenced as "cervical cancer proto-oncogene 2," MRPS11 does not have a validated oncogenic role in current literature.
