Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S12 (MRPS12) is a nuclear-encoded component of the small (28S) subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome, essential for the fidelity of mitochondrial protein synthesis and involved in decoding mitochondrial mRNA. MRPS12 is implicated in controlling susceptibility to aminoglycoside antibiotics and has been associated with cancer biology, including acting as a potential oncogene and prognostic biomarker in ovarian cancer. Recent analyses reveal that its overexpression correlates with poor outcomes and immune cell infiltration in ovarian cancer. MRPS12 is critical for mitochondrial function and, by extension, cellular energy production, with broader links to disease when dysregulated.
