Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S15 (MRPS15) is a nucleus-encoded protein that is a structural component of the small 28S subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome. It plays a critical role in mitochondrial translation by binding the mitochondrial 12S rRNA and participating in the assembly and function of the mitochondrial ribosome, which is responsible for synthesizing the mitochondrially encoded polypeptides essential for oxidative phosphorylation. MRPS15 shows significant evolutionary divergence from its prokaryotic counterparts and is among the least conserved small subunit mitochondrial ribosomal proteins. Defects in mitochondrial ribosomal proteins can lead to disturbances of mitochondrial protein synthesis, impacting cellular energy production[1][5][7]. MRPS15 itself is not considered a therapeutic target, nor is it known to be directly implicated as a biomarker or target of currently approved drugs.
