Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S16 pseudogene 1 (MRPS16P1) is a processed pseudogene corresponding to the MRPS16 gene, which encodes a protein of the small subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome. As a pseudogene, MRPS16P1 lacks the coding capacity for a functional protein. It is not known to have a direct biological role or disease association, and is not considered a therapeutic target. In general, pseudogenes may occasionally participate in gene regulation or act as molecular decoys for RNA-binding proteins or microRNAs, but this has not been reported for MRPS16P1 specifically.
