The mitochondrial ribosomal protein S18C pseudogene is a non-functional genomic sequence related to the gene encoding mitochondrial ribosomal protein S18C. Pseudogenes result from gene duplication or retrotransposition and lack the capacity to produce functional proteins. This pseudogene is one of several variants present in the human genome (e.g., MRPS18CP2, MRPS18CP3, etc.) and is often classified as either a processed or duplicated pseudogene, based on its origin and structure. Pseudogenes provide important molecular records for gene and genome evolution, but do not participate in cellular functions or serve as direct targets in therapeutics. Focusing on the functional gene MRPS18C, and not its pseudogenes, is necessary for studies of mitochondrial ribosomes or drug targeting.
