Overview

MRPS18CP7, also known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein S18C pseudogene 7, is a human pseudogene corresponding to the MRPS18C gene, which normally encodes a member of the mitochondrial ribosomal protein S18 family. Unlike coding genes, pseudogenes are typically non-functional sequences of genomic DNA that arise from formerly functional genes but have lost their protein-coding ability or are otherwise no longer expressed in the cell[4][5][6]. MRPS18CP7 is not thought to encode any functional protein and, therefore, is not considered a molecular target for therapeutic intervention. While mitochondrial ribosomal proteins have important roles in mitochondrial translation and energy metabolism—and are being investigated as potential cancer targets[3]—pseudogenes like MRPS18CP7 are primarily relevant as genomic evolutionary markers or, in rare cases, as regulators of homologous gene expression; there is no evidence that MRPS18CP7 plays such a regulatory or pathological role. Key context: There is no evidence MRPS18C pseudogene 7 produces a protein product or serves as a drug target, biomarker, or functionally active molecule in any known pathway[4][6]. "Pseudogene" status means it is generally irrelevant for therapeutic or diagnostic use, unless specifically shown otherwise, which is not the case for MRPS18CP7. MRPS18CP7's canonical "parent" gene, MRPS18C, encodes a mitochondrial ribosomal protein, which is part of the mitochondrial protein synthesis machinery[2][3]; however, this function does not apply to the pseudogene itself. If you are querying for a mitochondrial ribosomal protein target, consider instead the functional MRPS18C or related protein-coding genes.
