Overview

MRPS21P1, or Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S21 pseudogene 1, is a processed pseudogene found in humans. It is related to the MRPS21 gene, which encodes a protein component of the small subunit (28S) of the mitochondrial ribosome critical for protein synthesis within mitochondria[1][2][5]. Unlike the functional MRPS21 gene, MRPS21P1 does not produce a functional protein and is not known to be involved in normal biology or disease processes. There is no evidence in current databases or published literature that MRPS21P1 is a therapeutic target, biomarker, or interacts with drugs. Though some pseudogenes can act as regulatory RNAs (e.g., serving as microRNA decoys that affect gene expression), no such function is specifically attributed to MRPS21P1[2][6]. MRPS21P1 should not be conflated with the protein-coding MRPS21, which is implicated in mitochondrial translation and may be associated with rare mitochondrial diseases[3][5][7]. The pseudogene itself is not considered an actionable biological target in research or medicine.
