MRPS21P2 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S21 pseudogene 2) is a human pseudogene corresponding to the mitochondrial ribosomal protein S21 family[2][3][6][10]. While the functional parent gene (MRPS21) encodes a protein required for mitochondrial ribosome small subunit assembly and protein synthesis within mitochondria, MRPS21P2 does **not** produce a functional protein. Pseudogenes such as MRPS21P2 arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and are considered non-functional genomic elements, although some may play regulatory roles in rare cases[6][8]. There are no annotated biological functions, disease associations, drug interactions, or known biomedical relevance specifically for MRPS21P2. Key interpretation note: MRPS21P2—unlike the parent MRPS21 gene—is not a therapeutic, enzymatic, or receptor target, but rather a genetic "fossil" (pseudogene) preserved in the human genome[3][4][6][10].
