Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S21 pseudogene 6 (MRPS21P6) is a processed pseudogene of the MRPS21 gene, located on human chromosome 10q23.1[4][2]. MRPS21P6 does not encode a functional protein, and there is no evidence of its involvement in mitochondrial ribosomal function or disease. The functional gene, MRPS21, encodes a component of the mitochondrial ribosome small subunit involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis[3][5]. Like other processed pseudogenes, MRPS21P6 may serve as a molecular evolutionary record but has not been shown to have biological activity or disease association. Pseudogenes can sometimes act as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) by titrating microRNAs that target their parental gene, but no such function has been reported for MRPS21P6[6]. Key context: - MRPS21P6 is an approved pseudogene locus per HGNC and GeneCards, but it is not protein-coding and is not recognized as a therapeutic target[1][2][8]. - There is nothing to indicate MRPS21P6 is a clinically actionable or druggable target; all functional or disease relevance relates to the parent gene (MRPS21), not this pseudogene. - Pseudogenes as a class ("Other") may rarely exert regulatory roles, but no such evidence exists for MRPS21P6 specifically[4][6]. Summary: MRPS21P6 is a mitochondrial ribosomal pseudogene and not a functional gene or valid therapeutic target. It is not involved in drug interactions, mechanisms of action, or disease roles, and appears in gene catalogs only as a processed, non-coding pseudogene[2][4].
