Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S21 pseudogene 9 (MRPS21P9) is a human pseudogene located on chromosome 9. It arises from the mitochondrial ribosomal protein S21 gene (MRPS21), which is involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis, but MRPS21P9 itself does not produce a functional protein product. Pseudogenes like MRPS21P9 are generally considered nonfunctional remnants of ancestral genes, although some recent research suggests pseudogene transcripts can influence biological processes, such as acting as microRNA decoys and thus affecting the expression levels of their parent genes. There are currently no known therapeutic applications, disease associations, or drug interactions specific to MRPS21P9, and it is not considered a conventional target for drug discovery or mechanistic studies in cell biology.

Biological functions

Possible regulation of parent gene transcript by competing for microRNA binding, generally inferred for pseudogenes
03

Disease associations

Other (no direct role demonstrated; some pseudogenes can impact gene regulation and have been implicated in disease contexts indirectly, but there is no specific evidence for MRPS21P9)
