Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S25 pseudogene represents a genomically encoded DNA locus that resembles the nuclear gene encoding the mitochondrial ribosomal protein S25, but has disabling mutations and thus does not produce a functional protein. Pseudogenes such as this may be transcribed into RNA, which can act as regulatory noncoding RNAs in some cases, functioning as decoys for microRNAs and potentially influencing the expression of their protein-coding relatives. There is no evidence this pseudogene itself is directly involved in disease or serves as a therapeutic target[1][4][6].

Biological functions

Can act as a microRNA decoy or “endogenous sponge” which means transcribed pseudogene RNA may regulate the levels of cognate gene products by binding to microRNAs, thereby affecting microRNA activity in the cell. This is a regulatory noncoding RNA function rather than direct protein-coding or enzymatic activity
