Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S26 is a component of the small 28S subunit of the mammalian mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome)[1]. It is encoded by nuclear DNA and imported into the mitochondria, where it contributes to the synthesis of mitochondrial-encoded proteins required for oxidative phosphorylation[1]. Mitoribosomes differ from cytoplasmic and prokaryotic ribosomes in protein/rRNA ratio and sequence divergence. MRPS26 is essential for the assembly and function of the mitoribosome, and defects in the gene are associated with rare mitochondrial diseases, particularly affecting respiratory chain function[1][4]. Like other ribosomal proteins, it may play roles in the regulation of cell growth and apoptosis, although these functions are less well-characterized for mitochondrial ribosomal proteins compared to cytoplasmic ones[2].
