Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S27 (MRPS27) is a nuclear-encoded protein that is a component of the small (28S) subunit of the mammalian mitochondrial ribosome. It plays a vital role in mitochondrial protein synthesis by binding mitochondrial 12S rRNA and tRNA(Glu) and stimulating translation of key mitochondrial mRNAs, especially those encoding electron transport chain subunits. MRPS27 is also involved in positive regulation of cell proliferation and has been connected to tumor cell growth, suggesting a possible role in cancer biology. Mutations and variations in MRPS27 or other mitoribosomal proteins may be implicated in mitochondrial diseases (e.g., Leigh disease) and other metabolic or neurodegenerative disorders due to their central role in mitochondrial function. There are no drugs known to interact directly with MRPS27, nor is it considered a direct therapeutic target.
