Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S31 (MRPS31) is a structural protein component of the small (28S) subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome). It is encoded by a nuclear gene and imported into mitochondria to participate in mitochondrial protein synthesis. MRPS31 contributes to the ribosomal structure, facilitating translation of mitochondrial mRNAs vital for mitochondrial function and energy production. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitochondrial ribosomes do not contain 5S rRNA, and have a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio. MRPS31 does not serve as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or direct drug target. There is no established direct disease linkage, although one study associated variants in this gene with Type 1 diabetes, but its causative or functional relevance is not clarified. No drugs, biomarkers, or toxicity data are directly associated with MRPS31.
