Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S31 pseudogene 1 (**MRPS31P1**) is a human pseudogene classified as a duplicated pseudogene derived from the functional mitochondrial ribosomal protein S31 gene (**MRPS31**)[1][2][5]. Unlike the functional MRPS31, which encodes a component of the mitochondrial ribosome, MRPS31P1 is non-coding and consists only of a single exon. It shows high sequence similarity (~74%) to the functional protein, but lacks the capacity to encode a functional product[2]. MRPS31P1 is ancient and incomplete; its existence reflects evolutionary processes such as gene duplication. It is not involved in drug action, protein synthesis, disease mechanisms, or therapeutic targeting[2][5][7].
