Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S31 pseudogene 4 (MRPS31P4) is a duplicated pseudogene derived from the gene encoding mitochondrial ribosomal protein S31. Unlike functional genes, pseudogenes like MRPS31P4 do not produce proteins, but may harbor transcriptional activity or exert regulatory effects such as generation of noncoding RNAs in some cases, though no such functions have been described for MRPS31P4. It retains partially the exon structure of its parental gene but is not known to play a direct role in mitochondrial translation, cell biology, disease, or as a drug target[1][4][8]. It is cataloged in major genomic databases as a nonfunctional genomic locus.
