Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S5 pseudogene (ENSG00000250547, LOC133332) is a DNA sequence in the human genome that arose from the duplication or retrotransposition of the MRPS5 gene, encoding the mitochondrial ribosomal protein S5. Unlike the functional MRPS5, this pseudogene harbors mutations and/or lacks regulatory elements necessary for protein production, making it nonfunctional at the protein level. Recent research shows that some pseudogenes can regulate their parental genes through non-coding RNA-based mechanisms; however, there is no evidence for a specific regulatory role or involvement in human disease for this particular pseudogene. It is not considered a therapeutic target, biomarker, or drug-interacting entity.

Biological functions

May play regulatory roles (e.g., influence gene regulation as non-coding RNA, microRNA decoy, competitive endogenous RNA)Potential modulation of parental gene expression (speculative; some pseudogenes regulate the expression of their functional counterparts via RNA interference or acting as miRNA sinks)

Disease associations

Other (general roles in cancer have been observed for some pseudogenes, but no specific disease link is established for this pseudogene)
