Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S7 pseudogene (MRPS7P1) is a nonfunctional DNA sequence that resembles the functional MRPS7 gene, which encodes the 28S ribosomal protein S7, a mitochondrial protein involved in mitochondrial translation. Pseudogenes like MRPS7P1 do not code for functional proteins, and are generally considered genomic remnants without biological activity. MRPS7P1 itself is not implicated in normal physiology, disease, or as a therapeutic target. By contrast, the functional MRPS7 gene participates in the mitochondrial small ribosomal subunit and is required for mitochondrial protein synthesis. Pseudogenes of MRPS7 have been mapped to multiple chromosomal locations, including chromosomes 8p and 12p, but these do not have coding potential nor regulatory functions established in the literature[4].
