Overview

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S9 (MRPS9) is a protein encoded by the nuclear MRPS9 gene and is a structural component of the small 28S subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome) in mammals. These ribosomal proteins facilitate protein synthesis within mitochondria. Unlike cytoplasmic ribosomes, mitochondrial ribosomes have a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio and differ notably in their biochemical composition and sequence across species. MRPS9 is necessary for mitochondrial translation, but is not recognized as a druggable target or disease-associated protein in most current research.
