Mitochondrial Ribosome (Mitoribosome)

Target
Mitoribosome
Molecular classification
Ribosome, RNA-protein complex
01

Overview

The mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome) is a specialized ribosome located within mitochondria, responsible for translating proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). These proteins are essential components of the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) complexes involved in ATP production. Mitoribosomes are structurally and functionally distinct from both bacterial and cytoplasmic ribosomes, reflecting their unique evolutionary adaptation to synthesize hydrophobic membrane proteins. Mutations affecting mitoribosome components can lead to severe mitochondrial disorders due to impaired respiratory chain function, making it a potential drug target.
