Mitochondrial translational release factor 1-like pseudogene is a nonfunctional copy of a mitochondrial translational release factor gene, found in the human genome. Pseudogenes are segments of DNA that bear high similarity to functional genes but typically contain mutations or sequence defects that prevent them from encoding active proteins. While most pseudogenes do not have biological activity, exceptional cases exist where their RNA transcripts may exert regulatory functions. For this specific pseudogene, there is no evidence supporting a functional or regulatory role, and it is not considered a therapeutic target[2][5][8]. The parent gene for mitochondrial translational release factors (such as MTRF1, MTRF1L) are involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis and termination, but their pseudogenes do not produce protein and have no direct role in cellular functions[3][6][7]. Pseudogenes can sometimes complicate genetic or transcriptomic studies due to sequence similarity with functional genes[5].
