Overview

Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are a family of transporters located in the inner mitochondrial membrane that mediate a regulated discharge of the proton gradient generated by the respiratory chain, effectively uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis. This process dissipates energy as heat rather than storing it as ATP, and serves several physiological roles including thermogenesis, regulation of redox balance, and reduction in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production.
