Mitochondrially encoded cytochrome b pseudogene 15 (MTCYBP15)

Overview

MT-CYB pseudogene 15 (MTCYBP15) is a genomic DNA sequence resembling the functional MT-CYB gene but carries mutations or rearrangements that make it non-functional, so it does not code for a protein. Unlike the functional MT-CYB, which encodes cytochrome b (a component of mitochondrial complex III that is critical for cellular energy production and associated with various mitochondrial diseases), this pseudogene has no known biological activity or disease involvement. The functional "MT-CYB" gene is important in mitochondrial electron transport and is associated with disorders when mutated, but "MT-CYB pseudogene 15" (MTCYBP15) is not an active gene and has no known clinical or therapeutic significance. "Pseudogenes" are typically non-coding, non-functional remnants of once-active genes. They are not considered therapeutic targets and should not be confused with active mitochondrial genes.
