Mitochondrially encoded cytochrome b pseudogene 20 (MTCYBP20) is a nuclear pseudogene located at chromosome 8q11.1. Unlike the functional mitochondrial MT-CYB gene—which encodes cytochrome b, a core subunit of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex III involved in electron transport and ATP synthesis—MTCYBP20 does not encode a functional protein and is considered non-coding. Pseudogenes like MTCYBP20 contain significant sequence similarity to their protein-coding counterparts but typically harbor disruptive mutations that prevent expression of a functional gene product. The functional homolog MT-CYB is important in mitochondrial bioenergetics and disease, but this pseudogene itself has no known biological function, therapeutic targeting, or role in disease[2][4][8].
