Overview

Mitochondrially encoded cytochrome b pseudogene 23 (MTCYBP23) is a nuclear pseudogene derived from mitochondrial cytochrome b (MT-CYB). These pseudogenes, known as nuclear mitochondrial DNA segments (NUMTs), are non-functional sequences located in the nuclear genome that exhibit high sequence similarity to functional mitochondrial genes like MT-CYB. MTCYBP23, typical of NUMTs, arises from the evolutionary transfer of mitochondrial DNA fragments into the nuclear genome. It does not produce a functional protein, plays no known biological role, and is not considered a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter. Unlike the functional mitochondrial MT-CYB, MTCYBP23 is not involved in cellular respiration, electron transport, or mitochondrial disease. There are no known drugs, mechanisms of action, or biomarker applications related to MTCYBP23. However, its presence can sometimes confound genetic analyses or mitochondrial disease diagnostics if not accurately distinguished from authentic mitochondrial sequences, posing a challenge in molecular biology.
