Mitochondrially encoded cytochrome b pseudogene 33 (MTCYBP33) is a nuclear-encoded pseudogene found on chromosome 16. Pseudogenes are nonfunctional genomic DNA sequences similar to functional genes but generally lack the ability to encode proteins or have regulatory activity. MTCYBP33 is related by sequence to the active MT-CYB gene, which is responsible for producing cytochrome b, an essential subunit of mitochondrial Complex III responsible for electron transport and energy production. Unlike MT-CYB, MTCYBP33 does not encode a functional protein and is not involved in mitochondrial respiration, disease pathology, or as a drug target. There is no evidence for therapeutic relevance, drug interaction, biomarker utility, or biological function attributed to MTCYBP33. It is not considered a canonical therapeutic target.
