The mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase I pseudogene is a nonfunctional, non-protein-coding genomic DNA sequence derived from the functional MT-CO1 gene, which encodes the first subunit of the cytochrome c oxidase complex in mitochondria. While the active form (COX1) is essential for the electron transport chain and cellular ATP production, the pseudogene itself does not produce a functional protein and has no direct biological or therapeutic relevance. Misidentifying this pseudogene as a therapeutic target would be incorrect, as it does not encode an active enzyme, receptor, transporter, or any druggable protein[1][3].
