Overview

MT-CO1 pseudogene 28 (MTCO1P28) is a genomic DNA sequence on human chromosome 16p13.3 that is highly homologous to the mitochondrial gene encoding cytochrome c oxidase I (MT-CO1), but it is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it does not produce a functional protein product. Pseudogenes arise from duplication or retrotransposition of genes followed by mutational inactivation. MTCO1P28 therefore does not function as an enzyme, receptor, or structural protein, and is not relevant as a therapeutic or diagnostic target. It is different from the active MT-CO1 gene, which encodes a critical mitochondrial protein involved in the electron transport chain, whereas MTCO1P28 lacks this biological role. There is nothing inherently wrong with the gene name or its sequence; the issue is that it lacks functional relevance as a drug target since it is a pseudogene. Any associations with disease, biochemical function, or drug interactions pertain to the active MT-CO1 gene, not this pseudogene.
