Overview

Mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase I pseudogene 29 (MTCO1P29) is a pseudogene characterized by DNA sequence similarity to the functional mitochondrial gene MT-CO1, which encodes subunit I of the cytochrome c oxidase enzyme, a critical component of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and electron transport[1][5]. Pseudogenes like MTCO1P29 are essentially non-functional remnants within the genome and do not contribute to protein synthesis or serve physiological roles. Unlike the protein-coding MT-CO1 gene, which has established implications in mitochondrial diseases and cancer, pseudogenes such as MTCO1P29 do not have clinical significance, are not involved in drug interactions, and are not recognized as therapeutic drug targets[3][4]. There is no evidence to support any role for MTCO1P29 in disease, biomarker development, or drug discovery.
