MT-CO1 pseudogene 4 (MTCO1P4) is a nuclear pseudogene related to the active mitochondrial MT-CO1 gene, which encodes subunit I of cytochrome c oxidase, a core enzyme in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation[1][3]. While MT-CO1 plays a vital role in ATP production and has documented roles in metabolism and disease[1][3][4], MTCO1P4 does not encode a functional protein, has no known biological activity, and is not considered a therapeutic target. Pseudogenes like MTCO1P4 may occasionally have regulatory RNA functions, but there are no published reports of such activity for this locus in humans. Consequently, MTCO1P4 is not relevant for drug targeting, disease association, biomarker development, or safety evaluation.
