Mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase II pseudogene

Overview

Mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase II pseudogenes are DNA sequences derived from the functional mitochondrial gene MT-CO2, which encodes cytochrome c oxidase subunit II, a core enzyme involved in mitochondrial electron transport and ATP generation. This pseudogene, present in the nuclear genome, no longer encodes a functional protein, having lost its protein-coding ability due to disabling mutations such as frameshifts or premature stop codons. While most pseudogenes are nonfunctional genomic relics, certain pseudogenes in general can at times have regulatory effects (for instance, through RNA-mediated mechanisms), but there is no direct evidence suggesting functional or disease relevance for this particular pseudogene. Pseudogenes are not therapeutic targets, and this entry appears either as a misannotation or a biologically non-functional sequence differentiated from the functional MT-CO2 gene, which is involved in the electron transport chain.

Biological functions

None (as a pseudogene, it does not encode a functional protein; pseudogenes can sometimes have regulatory roles as lncRNAs, but specific function for this pseudogene is not established)
03

Disease associations

Other (rarely, some pseudogenes are implicated in cancer or other disease, e.g. through regulatory effects, but there is no direct evidence for this specific pseudogene association)
