MTCO2P19 is a pseudogene in the human genome, meaning it is a non-functional DNA sequence that closely resembles the protein-coding MT-CO2 gene (mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase II), but contains mutations, deletions, or other changes that prevent it from encoding a functional protein. The canonical MT-CO2 gene encodes a critical subunit of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex IV, but MTCO2P19 produces no functional protein and does not participate in respiratory chain activity.
