MT-CO2 pseudogene 25 (MTCO2P25) is a human genomic pseudogene that is highly similar in sequence to the mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase II gene (MT-CO2), but is located in the nuclear genome rather than mitochondrial DNA. It does not encode a functional protein and there is no evidence it has biological or therapeutic relevance. Pseudogenes such as MTCO2P25 are typically non-functional remnants of genes resulting from duplication or retrotransposition events, and while some pseudogenes can regulate other genes, there is no current data to indicate that MTCO2P25 has such activity.
