MTCO2P5 is a noncoding pseudogene located in the nuclear genome that shares high sequence similarity to the mitochondrial MT-CO2 gene. MTCO2P5 does not encode a functional protein and is classified as a nuclear mitochondrial DNA segment. Such pseudogenes result from ancient integration events where mitochondrial DNA was incorporated into nuclear DNA. The canonical MT-CO2 gene encodes cytochrome c oxidase subunit II, a key component of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex IV, but the pseudogene MTCO2P5 itself is neither expressed nor functional.
