MT-CO3 pseudogene 21 (MTCO3P21) is a designated pseudogene found in the human genome[2][4]. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences that resemble known genes but have lost their protein-coding ability due to mutations, deletions, or truncations. MTCO3P21 bears similarity to the functional gene MT-CO3, which codes for cytochrome c oxidase subunit III—an essential component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex IV[1][6]. Unlike the active MT-CO3 gene, the MTCO3P21 pseudogene does not produce a functional protein and has no known biological, therapeutic, or diagnostic role[2][4]. There is no evidence of its involvement in disease, drug interactions, or clinical biomarkers.
