Overview

MT-CO3 pseudogene 43 (MTCO3P43), also known as mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase III pseudogene 43, is a processed pseudogene in the human genome and not a functional protein-coding gene. This locus is distinct from the canonical mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit III (MT-CO3, COX3), which is an active component of respiratory complex IV. MT-CO3 pseudogene 43 (MTCO3P43) is a human processed pseudogene found on chromosome 2 (GRCh38: NC_000002.12). The canonical mitochondrial gene MT-CO3 encodes cytochrome c oxidase subunit III and is essential for oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial respiration; however, the pseudogene MTCO3P43 is non-coding, does not produce protein, and has no established biological or pathological role. Pseudogenes like MTCO3P43 arise during evolution from duplication or retrotransposition events and usually lack regulatory elements necessary for expression. Therefore, MTCO3P43 is not considered a target for drug development, disease association, or biomarker use. MTCO3P43 is a processed pseudogene with no functional protein product, biological activity, or clinical relevance. It should not be confused with the protein-coding gene MT-CO3 (COX3), which plays critical roles in mitochondrial respiration and disease.
