MTCO3P5 (mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase III pseudogene 5) is a nuclear pseudogene based on the mitochondrial gene for cytochrome c oxidase subunit III (MT-CO3). Unlike the functional MT-CO3 gene, MTCO3P5 does not encode a protein and has no established biological or therapeutic role. Pseudogenes are sequences in the genome that resemble known genes but are typically non-functional due to mutations or truncations that prevent the expression of an active protein. MTCO3P5 serves as a genomic remnant of mitochondrial gene transfer and is not involved in electron transport, mitochondrial function, or pathogenesis.
