Cytochrome c oxidase subunit pseudogenes do not code for functional proteins; they have been inactivated by mutation. Such pseudogenes are present in the human genome, reflecting evolutionary processes, and have no role in mitochondrial function or human disease except as rare elements of genetic regulation in specific contexts.
