The mitochondrially encoded NADH dehydrogenase 4 pseudogene is a non-protein-coding genetic sequence in the human genome. Unlike the functional MT-ND4 gene (which encodes a core subunit of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase Complex I involved in electron transport and ATP production), this pseudogene does not encode a functional protein and does not participate in mitochondrial respiration, energy production, or known therapeutic pathways. Pseudogenes such as this are genomic segments with high sequence similarity to their active counterparts but have acquired disabling mutations that prevent protein expression, often as evolutionary remnants.
