Overview

MTND2P25, or mitochondrially encoded NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit 2 pseudogene 25, is classified as a **pseudogene** in the human genome[2][4][9]. It shares sequence similarity with MT-ND2, a protein-coding mitochondrial gene critical for the function of mitochondrial respiratory chain Complex I[1][3][8]. MTND2P25 itself **does not encode a functional protein** and is not associated with canonical mitochondrial electron transport or ATP synthesis. There is currently no evidence for its direct involvement in known biological processes, disease mechanisms, or as a therapeutic target. No drugs, biomarkers, or mechanisms of action are associated with it, and it is not considered a target for therapy. Its presence mainly reflects the existence of non-functional, nuclear-encoded sequences derived from mitochondrial genes, commonly designated as NUMTs (nuclear mitochondrial DNA segments)[2][4][9]. The gene is recorded at HGNC:42126 and NCBI Gene:100873231[2][4][9]. MTND2P25 should not be confused with the functional mitochondrial gene MT-ND2 or its protein product NADH dehydrogenase 2[1][3][8].
