Overview

MTND2P33 is a pseudogene found in the nuclear genome (chromosome 4q32.1) that shares homology with the mitochondrial gene MT-ND2 but does not produce a functional protein[4][6]. Unlike the functional mitochondrial-encoded MT-ND2 gene, which is involved in electron transport and energy metabolism, MTND2P33 has no known biological function, does not serve as a therapeutic or diagnostic target, and is not involved in known disease pathways. Nuclear pseudogenes of mitochondrial genes (numts) commonly occur due to transfer of mitochondrial DNA fragments into the nuclear genome, but these pseudogenes are generally nonfunctional[9]. MTND2P33 is not a functional gene or protein and is not considered a drug target. It should not be confused with the active mitochondrial gene MT-ND2, which has important roles in respiration and disease[1][2][10][11]. No literature supports a direct disease association, functional classification, or drug interactions for MTND2P33.
