Overview

MT-ND3 pseudogene 15 (MTND3P15) is a nuclear pseudogene sequence similar to the mitochondrially encoded NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit 3 (MT-ND3) gene. Pseudogenes such as MTND3P15 are noncoding DNA segments arising from ancestral gene duplications or retrotranspositions that have lost their protein-coding ability due to mutations. They do not produce functional protein products and are not involved in canonical mitochondrial function or electron transport. Most mitochondrial pseudogenes ("numts") are considered functionally inert and are not recognized as therapeutic targets or druggable entities[5]. The functional mitochondrial gene MT-ND3, in contrast, encodes an essential component of respiratory chain Complex I involved in electron transport and is implicated in various mitochondrial diseases, but MTND3P15 itself has no reported clinical or therapeutic relevance[1][2][3][5].
