Overview

MTND4P18 (mitochondrially encoded NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit 4 pseudogene 18) is a nuclear-encoded pseudogene with homology to the mitochondrial MT-ND4 gene, which itself encodes a key subunit of complex I in the electron transport chain. Unlike MT-ND4, MTND4P18 has mutations preventing it from encoding a functional protein, so it does not participate in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation or any known cellular function, nor is it a therapeutic target[4].\n\nNote: If you intended to inquire about the functional mitochondrial MT-ND4 gene/protein (not the pseudogene), it is a component of complex I, critical for mitochondrial respiration, and is linked to mitochondrial diseases and has potential diagnostic implications[1][2][3]. The pseudogene variant (MTND4P18), however, is not a functional target.
