Overview

Mitofusin 1 pseudogene (ENSG00000229288) is a genomic sequence highly homologous to the functional *Mitofusin 1* gene but harbors disabling mutations such as premature stop codons, insertions, or deletions that prevent it from coding for a functional protein[1][5]. Like other pseudogenes, it may occasionally be transcribed as non-coding RNA and participate in cellular regulatory networks by acting as a ceRNA and interacting with microRNAs, potentially influencing the expression of related genes including MFN1[3][5]. However, pseudogenes are not considered direct molecular targets for drugs or therapies, and the mitofusin 1 pseudogene should not be confused with the functional MFN1 protein, which plays an essential role in mitochondrial fusion and disease when mutated[2][8]. Identification and proper annotation of pseudogenes are important in genomics to distinguish them from functional genes and to avoid errors in drug targeting and disease gene association[1][5].

Disease associations

Pseudogenes in general may contribute to ceRNA networks and impact diseases through miRNA interactions, but there is no direct evidence for roles of the mitofusin 1 pseudogene in disease; this is distinct from the protein-coding MFN1 geneDisease association should not be attributed to the pseudogene without specific experimental evidence.
