Overview

Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are a family of serine/threonine-specific protein kinases that play a central role in transducing extracellular signals into various intracellular responses. They are key regulators of essential cellular processes, including proliferation, gene expression, differentiation, mitosis, cell survival, and apoptosis. MAPKs are activated by a wide range of stimuli and function within highly conserved signaling modules known as MAPK cascades or pathways. These kinases are regulated by phosphorylation and dephosphorylation events. Major subfamilies include ERKs, JNKs, and p38 isoforms. MAPKs are evolutionarily conserved and regulate diverse cellular programs.
