Overview

Mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1), commonly known as ERK2, is a serine/threonine protein kinase that plays a central role in the MAP kinase signaling pathway. ERK2 acts as an integration point for multiple biochemical signals and regulates diverse cellular processes including proliferation, differentiation, transcription regulation, development, cell cycle progression, migration, survival, metabolism, and apoptosis. It is activated by MEKs via dual phosphorylation and phosphorylates substrates containing Pro-Xaa-(Ser/Thr)-Pro sequences. Dysregulation of ERK2 is implicated in cancer, making it a target for anti-tumor drug development.
