Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are a family of serine/threonine protein kinases that transduce extracellular signals into cellular responses. MAPK1 (commonly known as ERK2), MAPK8 (JNK1), and MAPK14 (p38α) are prototypic MAPK subfamily members, each activated by distinct upstream kinases and mediating specific, sometimes overlapping biological processes.
